Parallels Between Cable Street And Garvaghy Road ‘Unmistakable’ - Kearney
Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has drawn a direct line between the anti-fascist resistance of 1936 in London's East End and the current solidarity shown with residents on the Garvaghy Road, urging action to prevent a contentious march.
Speaking at a rally marking the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, the party's national chairperson argued that the stand taken by campaigners in Portadown echoes the defiance shown nine decades ago.
He told the crowd: "The East End stood courageously against British fascists' attempts to racially divide workers.
"Since last Saturday the people of Garvaghy Road, supported by community and political activists from across Ireland, have peacefully resisted the threat of an unwanted sectarian Orange march being forced through their area. "The historical parallels are unmistakable.
"Thousands have held the Garvaghy Road against those in unionism who want to turn back the clock.
"Democratic Ireland has been outraged. Now it is mobilised.
"The fascists did not pass in 1936. The Orange Order will not pass on Garvaghy Road.
"Because those of us who choose progress have taken a stand against those trying to destroy political progress and the peace process.
"The community resistance at Garvaghy Road is also a watershed moment. But, we are not going back.
"The British Secretary of State has the powers to stop this march. The British Labour Government must act.
"The impasse on Garvaghy Road is a test of Andy Burnham's commitment to the Irish peace process.
"There must be no Orange boots on Garvaghy Road. There can be no going back. Not now. Not ever."
