Man Jailed Over Drumcree/Garvaghy Road Disorder

A 28-year-old Portadown man has been sentenced to six-months in prison after being convicted of disorderly behaviour and attempted criminal damage.

Craigavon Magistrates' Court imposed a custodial sentence on Malachy McCann for offences in relation to the Drumcree/Garvaghy Road dispute.

Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Griffin said: "On Sunday, 27th September McCann stepped out from a crowd on the Garvaghy Road and threw a bottle at a police Land Rover.

"He then threw his arms up in the air and shouted in a provocative manner before being led away by the crowd.

"McCann left the scene but was later arrested by officers at his home address.

"This sentence reflects the seriousness with which this type of disorder is treated. Attacks on police officers and vehicles are wholly unacceptable, and we will take robust action against anyone involved in criminal behaviour.

"Our investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information, CCTV, dash-cam or mobile phone footage is asked to contact police on 101. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org."
