Yellow Weather Warning Issued As Storm Boelo Approaches

A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued for Northern Ireland as Storm Boelo is forecast to bring unsettled conditions on Saturday and Sunday.

The warning covers all six counties and will come into effect at 6pm on Saturday, 24 October, remaining in place until 3pm on Sunday, 25 October.

The Met Office expects strong westerly winds to spread across Northern Ireland on Saturday evening, with very windy conditions continuing overnight and into Sunday before gradually easing from the southwest during the afternoon.

Gusts of between 50mph and 60mph are expected widely, with speeds potentially reaching 65mph to 75mph in exposed and coastal areas.

The strong winds will be accompanied by blustery, occasionally heavy showers.

The Met Office has warned that the conditions could lead to travel disruption, with longer journey times and cancellations possible across road, rail, air and ferry services.

Some roads and bridges could close, while flying debris may pose a risk of injury. There is also a possibility of damage to buildings, including roof tiles being blown loose, and power cuts that could affect other services, including mobile phone coverage.

Large waves and debris thrown onto seafronts, coastal roads and properties could create additional hazards along the coast.

The warning has been issued as part of Storm Boelo, a deep area of low pressure forecast to affect Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern England over the weekend.

The Met Office has advised people to secure loose objects around their properties, including wheelie bins, garden furniture, trampolines and items in gardens that could be blown around.

People are also advised to check travel information before setting out, prepare for possible power cuts and take care around exposed coastal areas, where large waves can sweep people off their feet.

The Met Office has cautioned that weather warnings and forecasts may change as the storm develops.

Further updates are available through the Met Office weather warnings service.
