Met Office Issues Severe Weather Alerts As Storm Chandra Hits NI

Northern Ireland is bracing for significant travel disruption and hazardous conditions as Storm Chandra tracks across the region on Tuesday, 27 January.

The Met Office has updated its weather alerts, introducing an amber warning for wind alongside a widespread yellow warning for both wind and rain.

Amber Warning: Severe Wind (05:00 – 21:00) The most severe alert covers northern and eastern sections of the country. During this window, wind speeds are expected to escalate, with inland gusts reaching between 60mph and 70mph. Coastal areas are at particular risk, with potential gusts of 75mph and the development of large waves. Forecasters warn that this heightened level of weather poses a danger to life from flying debris and coastal spray, while structural damage and power outages are also possible.

Yellow Warning: Rain and Wind (02:00 – 21:00) A broader yellow warning is in effect across all counties from early Tuesday morning. Outbreaks of heavy rain will accompany the gale-force winds, with 20mm to 30mm of rainfall expected widely. Higher ground, particularly in the east, could see accumulations as high as 70mm.

Assistant Chief Fire & Rescue Officer Marcus Wright previously highlighted the dangers of such conditions, though the Met Office remains the primary source for this storm's trajectory. Because the ground is already saturated from recent rainfall, the risk of localised flooding in residential and business areas is high.

What to Expect:

• Travel: Likely delays to road, rail, air, and ferry services. High-sided vehicles may face particular challenges on exposed routes.

• Utilities: Potential for short-term loss of power and other essential services.

• Flooding: Spray and standing water on roads will make driving difficult; some properties may be at risk of flooding.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, such as garden furniture and bins, before the storm's arrival. Travel should be limited where possible during the peak of the amber warning, and motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution on coastal and high-altitude roads.
