Minister welcomes £1.7m Omagh facelift

Social Development Minister John Spellar has welcomed a £1.7 million project to enhance the appearance Omagh town centre.

Funded by the Department for Social Development, with contributions from Omagh District Council and the Department for Regional Development, work is due to commence next month on improvements to High Street, Market Street, Bridge Street and Scarffe’s Entry.

The Minister said: "This new work will carry on from the improvements to the Churches area, completed by DSD in 1999. It will improve the appearance of Omagh town centre for both local people and visitors and will contribute to the regeneration of West Tyrone generally."

Under the plans, streets will be repaved, while new street furniture, trees and public art will be incorporated. The scheme has been designed to give “a greater priority to the pedestrian, and special attention has been paid to ease of use by disabled people”.

It is envisaged that the two phase scheme will be completed by mid 2006, with a break between phase 1 and phase 2 timed to coincide with the Christmas shopping period.
