Coleraine provides model for community policing - Minister

Security Minister Shaun Woodward has praised Coleraine Police Station describing it as “a future model on which to base community policing for Northern Ireland”.

During a visit to the station this week, Mr Woodward, who met the District Commander, Dawson Cotton, local police officers and members of the local District Policing Partnership, said that if anyone wanted to get a real picture of how good community policing will work in Northern Ireland, “they should come here to Coleraine”.

“The Patten Report said that policing should be a matter for the whole community. The huge strides which have been made in policing in Northern Ireland are clearly reflected in police stations like Coleraine,” the Minister added.

Mr Woodward said community policing meant that the whole community getting involved and that officers should draw their strength from across the whole.

“This is being achieved across the Police Service in Northern Ireland and I was delighted to have the chance to see once more how best practice is being put into action in Coleraine,” he concluded.
