NI crime rates lower than England and Wales
Northern Ireland's recorded crime rates are lower than those in England and Wales, a new report has revealed.
The figures, outlining levels of recorded crimes in Northern Ireland in 2004/05 and comparative figures for England and Wales, were presented to the Northern Ireland Policing Board’s Corporate Policy Committee this week.
They showed that overall recorded crime in Northern Ireland fell by 8% in 2004/05 with the local rate of 691 crimes recorded per 10,000 people being significantly lower than the figure of 1,051 per 10,000 people in England and Wales.
During 2004/05 the greatest reductions in Northern Ireland crime offence classes were in robbery, which fell by 25%, vehicle crime, which fell by 24%, and domestic burglary, which fell by 18%.
Whilst the Northern Ireland clearance rate for murders and manslaughters has increased slightly in the past year, clearance rates for violent crimes have fallen from 54% in 2003/04 to 51% in 2004/05, compared to a slight increase in England and Wales.
Policing Board Chairman, Professor Sir Desmond Rea, said: “The latest figures show that crime rates in Northern Ireland are continuing to fall and that, across all categories of crime, levels here are lower than those in England and Wales. In terms of recorded crimes, Northern Ireland is a safer place to live than England and Wales.
“At a time when the police are facing much criticism from many groups and individuals within our society, these figures show that the PSNI, along with the District Policing Partnerships and those people who have engaged with local policing, are making a real difference in reducing our communities’ experiences of crime and ensuring that Northern Ireland remains one of the lowest crime areas in the UK.”

The Department of Finance (DoF) has announced that homes and businesses will begin receiving their rates bills from Friday, 05 April. The bill will set out the amount due for 2024/25, details of any rate relief which has been applied to your account and also any arrears from previous years that have not been paid.

The owners of the disputed Victoria Square Apartments will no longer be charged rates, with refunds to be issued for rates paid since April 2019. The valuation of properties within the Victoria Square apartment block has been subject to review by Land & Property Services (LPS) as part of an ongoing valuation appeals process.
