Man seriously injured during murder bid
Police are treating an attack on a man in west Belfast at the weekend as attempted murder.
The 22-year-old victim was stabbed a number of times and struck with a hammer during the attack which occured in the vicinity of Carrigart Avenue at around 3.25am. The victim sustained serious injuries to his head and chest and was immediately taken to hospital.
Three men have been arrested, one of whom was released on bail pending further enquiries.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of Carrigart Avenue around the time of the incident to contact them on 028 9065 0222.
Elsewhere, police in Londonderry are appealing for information after a man and his sister were attacked in the city on Saturday morning. At around 4am the man, who is in his 30’s, and his sister were walking home in the Galliagh Park area when a group of youths pulled up in a red Peugeot 306 and proceeded to brutally assault the man.
They knocked him to the ground before continually jumping on his head and kicking him while he lay on the ground. His sister was also punched during the attack.
Her brother is being treated in hospital for very serious head injuries.
The youths, believed to be in their teens and early 20’s fled in the car however one jeuvenile was arrested at the scene. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Man Shot In County Down
A 28-year-old man has been shot in the leg in a gun attack in County Down. The man was getting out of his car at the Quays in Killyleagh at about 1.00am on Wednesday morning when a man approached him and shot him. The man is recovering in hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A man has been shot in the ankle in Co L'Derry. The paramilitary-style attack happened near the Creggan shops at around 7.45pm on Thursday, 07 December. The 41-year-old man has been taken to hospital to be treated, however his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Police described the shooting as "brutal and horrific".

Man shot as police head off terror attack
A man is seriously ill in hospital after police opened fire on two men believed to be involved in planting an incendiary device in Belfast City centre last night. It is understood that two cars were driven to Upper Queen's Street at around 6pm. One of the cars was parked outside the vehicle tax office and the driver got into the second car.

A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.

Police Cancel Appeal For Missing Omagh Man
Police have said they believe missing Omagh man, Shane Sharkey, has been found in the Republic of Ireland. A police appeal for help in finding the 35-year-old has been cancelled, with police saying they now believe they know where he is. No further details have been released but police thanked the public for their help.
