Two men murdered in separate West Belfast attacks

A 21-year man has died, following an assault in West Belfast on Sunday evening.

The incident happened at a flat in the Oak Villa area, close to the Springfield Road, at around 7.15pm.

One man has been arrested in connection with the attack.

Police said that the man's death is being treating as murder.

On Friday, in nearby Whitecliff Parade in the Ballymurphy area, father of six, Gerard Devlin was fatally stabbed during a street fight at around 4pm.

Two others were treated in hospital for injuries sustained during the incident.

Throughout the weekend, the homes of Mr Devlin's neighbours in the Whitecliff area were petrol bombed, and trouble erupted in surrounding streets where two houses and a shop were badly damaged by fire.

Police do not believe that the two murders are linked, and have appealed for anyone with information on either incident to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
