Loyalists arrested in raid on north Belfast bar
Police have arrested 17 people in north Belfast following a raid in a pub in the area.
Officers in riot gear raided the Alexander Bar in York Street in the loyalist Tiger's Bay area of the city last night.
It has been reported that doors on the premises were ripped off their hinges and windows were broken during the incident.
It is understood that the operation was carried out against the Ulster Defence Association, who were allegedly rehearsing a show of strength in the bar when the raid took place.
Police have said that the 17 men arrested will be questioned in connection with inquiries into serious crime.
DUP MP for north Belfast, Nigel Dodds, said that local people had been shocked by last night's police operation.
He said: "We were getting reports of bangs in the area, and there was even a rumour of fatalities. Thankfully, that was not the case.
"Obviously we will have to wait and see what emerges following this incident, what charges there are and what evidence is brought forward by the police."
A police spokesman confirmed that "irritant rounds" were fired during last night's search, and denied that live rounds were used.
A strong police presence remained outside the premises for some time after the raid had ended.
