Man has both ears bitten off in west Belfast attack

A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following an assault in west Belfast earlier today.

Shortly after 9am, a man entered a house in the New Barnsley Gardens area of the city and attacked a 35-year-old man who was inside the property.

It is understood that the attacker doused the victim in a flammable substance before biting off both his ears and stabbing him in the arm.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria hospital, but was later transferred to the Ulster hospital in Dundonald.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested under suspicion of attempted murder and is currently helping police with their inquiries.

A police spokeswoman has confirmed the attack is not thought to be connected to the ongoing feud between two families in the west Belfast area, and are investigating the assault as a domestic matter.
