Eleven officers injured during disturbances

Eleven police officers have been injured following disturbances in north Belfast yesterday evening.

The incident happened at around 7pm, when a stolen car was in collision with a police Land Rover in the New Lodge Road area of the city.

Four police officers were injured.

A crowd of around 150 people then gathered at the scene and proceeded to attack the police, throwing the contents of a builders skip at them.

Police used CS spray during the incident, however seven officers were injured, including a policewoman who sustained cuts to her face by broken glass, and a policeman who suffered an abdominal injury.

Both were treated in hospital for their injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

One man was arrested.

Sinn Fein councillor Caral Ni Chuilin, described the PSNI's behaviour as “provocative” and added that she was questioning their tactics during the operation.

PSNI Chief Superintendent Gary White said that officers had come under attack while waiting for an ambulance to arrive to tend to an injured man and added that it is “extremely worrying” when police are attacked when trying to do their job.
