Two pensioners robbed in Co Down

A woman who had been celebrating her 92nd birthday was robbed in her Co Down home yesterday afternoon.

The pensioner awoke to find a teenage girl and man in her Killinchy home. When they left the woman discovered her handbag had been taken with around £20 inside.

The woman was uninjured but badly shaken following the incident.

Police have linked the robbery to a similar incident in Killyleagh on the same day when a young woman and man robbed a woman in her 80's after pretending to sell her calendars.

SDLP representative for Strangford Joe Byrne condemned the incident as "abhorrent and cowardly".

"To burgle two elderly ladies' homes shows the despicable mentality of these people and it is imperative that they are apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law," he said.
