Man charged over Turf Lodge knife attack
A 41-year-old man has appeared in court today in connection with a knife attack in the Turf Lodge area of Belfast.
Appearing at Belfast Magistrates’ Court, James Valliday, from Agincourt Avenue in south Belfast, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and aggravated burglary.
The charges are understood to relate to an attack on 25-year-old Ciaran McAreavey at his girlfriend’s home in Turf Lodge.
Mr McAreavey was dragged from the house where he and his girlfriend had been sleeping, on March 23 by two men and repeatedly slashed with knives. The victim needed almost 200 stitches and a blood transfusion after the attack.
Mr Valliday, who was remanded in custody until the end of the month, has denied all charges.
A 35-year-old man had also been arrested and has been released from custody pending further police enquiries.

The PSNI have appealed for information after four cars were set alight in north Belfast. Police say the suspected arson attack happened at around 22:30 on Tuesday night on the Whitewell Road. It is understood no one was injured in the incidents.

A 36-year-old man has been charged in connection with an arson attack at a shop in Belfast. The incident happened at premises in the Donegall Street area on Friday, 23 February. No-one was injured, however some people in the shop were left badly shaken.

A man has been charged in connection with an attack which happened on 06 March in east Belfast. A 32-year-old male was assaulted in the Templemore Avenue area and sustained serious head injuries. The suspect has been charged with grevious bodily harm (GBH) and is to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court on Friday, 14 October.

Man Shot In The Legs In North Belfast
A man has been shot in the legs in north Belfast. The paramilitary-style attack happened in the Jamaica Street area on Sunday, 25 June. The man was taken to hospital, however his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
