'Mini-tornado' hits Carrickfergus

A number of houses were damaged in Carrickfergus last night after what local residents described as a mini-tornado swept through the town.

Tiles were stripped off roofs and cars were tossed about as freak winds hit the Thorndene Park area at around 9pm.

A number of cars were damaged, and a motorist was also hospitalised after crashing his car in the strong gales.

One woman said her jeep shook from side to side.

Earlier police issued a warning advising motorists to take extra care as heavy rain spread across Northern Ireland.
