Fewer car crime and domestic burglary incidents

Car crime in Northern Ireland has been halved and incidents of domestic burglary have dropped by a quarter over the past five years, according to the Criminal Justice Minister Maria Eagle.

Speaking at an event in Belfast the Minister vowed that the Government is determined to build on the success and continue its work with the voluntary and statutory sectors to bring about real change for everyone in Northern Ireland.

Ms Eagle said: "Behind these statistics is the fact that there are 10,000 fewer victims of crime. That is a tremendous achievement, with 2,200 fewer homes burgled and over 8,000 fewer car crimes committed over the last five years.

"The challenge now is to build on this success. By working in partnership we have collectively made a real difference to thousands of people.

She continued: "It is important both to recognise these achievements and to improve even further the steps we can take to reduce crime and the fear of crime. There will be no let-up in the fight against criminals in Northern Ireland."
