Airline Starts Investigation Into Sinking Plane

Officials at First Choice airline are seeking an explanation after one of their aircraft sank into the tarmac at City of Derry airport.

A flight carrying 180 passengers inbound from Salou had been instructed to wait on a remote runway after landing.

The plane was waiting for 30 minutes when it began to sink into the tarmac in what the airport has described as an exceptional occurrence.

The pilot of the aircraft instructed the passengers to disembark, which enabled the plane to power itself out of the ground.

Rachel Wood, speaking for the airline, said that First Choice are currently trying to talk to the airport to understand how it happened.

In a statement, the airport said the flight had been diverted to the remote taxiway to facilitate two other aircraft that landed on Wednesday afternoon.

Passengers on an outbound flight to Salou were delayed for a short period as a result.
