Adams 'Supports' Police As Two Bailed Over Attack
Against a background of Sinn Fein President, Gerry Adams, insisting that the IRA will "not be returning" to deal with crime in west Belfast - as some of his constituents are alleged to be demanding, two men arrested over violence in Belfast city centre last month have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
It happened on Saturday 29 March. The pair, aged 29 and 24, were arrested on Tuesday.
They were being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder and affray.
The trouble began shortly after a crowd of about 40 tried to get into a bar in Castle Street, which left a 32-year-old man suffering serious head and neck injuries after he was attacked.
Yesterday, the Sinn Fein leader said he was well aware of the anger in his constituency over anti-social and criminal activity which, given the decades of conflict, was understandable.
But, speaking after three murders in the area over the last six months and as he prepared to meet Paul Goggins, the NIO Minister responsible for policing, Mr Adams insisted that all IRA activists were now working towards making the police more accountable and effective instead.
Recent incidents have included the death of a convicted IRA bomber who was the victim of a sustained, brutal attack
Frank McGreevy, 51, was discovered by his 15-year-old son in the living room of his ground floor flat at Ross Street in west Belfast, and later died from his injuries.
Police later arrested and charged a man in connection with the death.
