Tourists attacked by stone throwers in Londonderry

The reputation of Londonderry as a tourist destination has been tarnished following an attack on two Australian visitors.

The two women were attacked by stone throwing youths after they had contacted police on finding their hired car vandalised in the Nailor's Row area of the city.

When police arrived to assist the women, they were set upon by the youths.

Police had to escort the women to safety in an armoured car while another officer drove the hired car out of the area. The back window of the vehicle was subsequently smashed as it was driven away.

A police spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that the woman had since left the city and that such incidents were also damaging the city's reputation.

Meanwhile, worker's carrying out refurbishments at the Craigavon Bridge in the city where also attacked by stone throwers on Wednesday. It happened at about 0140 BST when a crowd of people gathered at Foyle Road.

The workmen had to be withdrawn for their own safety.
