'Broad Daylight' Stab Victim 'Stable'

As a 25-year-old Belfast stabbing victim remains seriously ill in hospital, a local MLA has called for greater cooperation with the police.

The man - who is being treated for stomach wounds - was attacked at a house at Epworth Street in east Belfast during daylight hours at about 1.30pm on Saturday. His condition is described as stable.

Later, the PSNI revealed that a 27-year-old man was being questioned by officers investigating the incident and also said that a 23-year-old man who was arrested over the matter as well, has since been released.

The East Belfast DUP MLA, Robin Newton commented: "If we want to see those who are willing to carry out vicious attacks put behind bars then the community must assist the PSNI.

"The police need the co-operation of the public to help clean up the streets of east Belfast," he said, noting that the police have asked anyone with information to contact detectives.

Mr Newton said that "once again this weekend the east of the city has witnessed a nasty knife attack".

He said that it has resulted in another victim facing life threatening injuries: "It is worrying that each weekend east Belfast now seems to witness another violent attack involving the use of knives.

"This occurrence is especially worrying as it took place in broad daylight.

"There can be no excuse for this level of violence. Whatever the cause of this latest brutal incident it will raise concerns within the entire east Belfast community.

"There are those, especially elderly persons, who greatly fear the levels of crime and the potential of becoming a victim of crime.

"This brutal attack in Epworth Street is yet another dreadful confrontation and the increasing trend of these violent incidents will eventually result in someone losing their life," he concluded.
