Solicitor 'Guilty' Of Incitement

A solicitor is to see the legal process from the other side - after being handcuffed and led away to the cells when he pleaded guilty to serious offences in court today.

Londonderry solicitor Manmohan 'Johnny' Sandhu, 44, from Colby Avenue had consistently denied charges against him which were linked to discussions he had with clients charges with terrorist offences.

However, he has changed his plea and admitted incitement to commit murder and perverting the court of justice. He was remanded in custody.

The case arose after conversations were covertly recorded as Sandhu consulted with clients at Antrim Serious Crime Unit.

Sandhu's trial was opened last week when a prosecuting barrister told Belfast Crown Court the solicitor faced six charges - one of incitement to commit murder, two counts of perverting the course of justice, two counts of doing an act to pervert the court of justice and a sixth count of conspiring to pervert the court of justice.

Sandhu maintained his innocence but his defence barrister asked today if the solicitor could be re-arraigned on all six counts on Tuesday.

He pleaded guilty to five charges and due to the pleas, the prosecuting barrister agreed that one of the counts of perverting the course of justice should not be proceeded with.

He did not apply for bail and will be sentenced at a later date.
