Flood Damage At Prison Halts Visits
Prison visits were disrupted at a Co Antrim jail on Thursday, because of flooding caused by torrential rain.
Due to the mostly localised severe rainfall last night one of the halls used for family and friends to visit those in Maghaberry Prison was flooded.
This morning, for "health and safety reasons" the Prison Service decided to temporarily close the hall for urgent remedial work to be carried out.
It is believed that flooding left electric cabling in a dangerous condition.
Officials said the visits area is only working at 50% capacity as the flooded hall will remain closed until further notice.
The Prison Service was today actively contacting those visitors who will be affected by the flooding in order to re-arrange their appointment.
Earlier on Thursday torrential rain caused traffic chaos in Dublin, with 15 days of rain falling in one hour in the area close to Dublin Airport.
In counterpoint, Londoners are experiencing what is anticipated to be the hottest day of the year.
The current sunny spell is now officially the warmest since July 2006, with yesterday (Wednesday) seeing the highest temperatures of the year at 31.8C on the mainland, and higher to come today.

A 53-year-old has reportedly died in custody at Maghaberry Prison, the Northern Ireland Prison Service has announced. The Department of Justice has reported that the prisoner died on Saturday 28 August, that his next of kin have been informed and that the death was not covid related.

A 22-year-old man has died while in custody at Maghaberry Prison, the Northern Ireland Prison Service has reported. The Department of Justice has confirmed that the man died in custody on the morning of Thursday, 30 August. The man's next of kin have been informed. The PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have been informed about the death.
