Glasgow Worker Is Tops
A Glasgow City Council worker has been praised as a top public servant.
Caroline Connor was named as the Outstanding Public Service Worker of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony recently.
The Manager at Battlefield Day Care Centre, Caroline collected her gong at a gala dinner in Glasgow's Hilton Hotel as part of the Herald Society Awards 2009.
Caroline secured the prize after being praised by judges for going ‘above and beyond the call of duty when required’.
Judges had heard how Caroline's hard work, determination and positive relationships with both staff and service users had led to the success of the centre in the Mount Florida area of the city.
But the judges were also told that Caroline often carries her work out into the community, delivering hot meals to those who are unable to attend the centre or even collecting their laundry from those unable to cope with the task.
She said: "It was lovely to get the award in the current climate. I work with a great bunch of people and that makes everything so much easier.
"It's good to get the recognition but it's good for the service users and staff at the centre as well. It's always better to take things as part of a team," she said.
Caroline, who has managed the Battlefield Day Care Centre for the past 12 years out of 24-years service to Social Work Services, added: "People are very appreciative if you do anything in addition to what’s expected of the service.
"It can be very difficult for the carers as well and we always try to help where ever we can. If you make people feel valued and show a bit of empathy, it is always appreciated."
