Soldier Is Latest Afghanistan Victim
Another British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan.
In what is fast becoming a near daily litany of tragedy, the soldier, from the 2nd Battalion The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, died in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province on Wednesday.
Next of kin have been informed. The death brings the number of UK service personnel killed in Afghanistan to 294.
Four NATO personnel have also been killed today when their helicopter was apparently shot down in Helmand. The nationalities of those killed have not yet been revealed.
It crashed into the Sangin district bazaar after coming under fire on Wednesday morning. Taliban claimed that its fighters had shot down the aircraft with a rocket-propelled grenade.
Yesterday, a soldier died in a gun battle in Afghanistan. The victim was from 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, attached to 4th Regiment Royal Artillery.
He was involved in "small arms fire engagement" with insurgent forces in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province
Meanwhile, at the weekend, a soldier, from East Kilbride, who was training with 1st Infantry Training Battalion based in Catterick collapsed and later died.
He was due to join The Royal Regiment of Scotland after his training.

The Ministry of Defence has named the British soldier killed in Afghanistan at the weekend as Corporal Darryl Gardiner from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Cpl Gardiner, 25, was serving in Afghanistan attached to 5th Regiment Royal Artillery and 52 Brigade's Reconnaissance Force.

The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has this morning expressed his sympathy to the family of a soldier from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards who has been killed in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that he was shot in an ambush while patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.

MoD names soldier killed in Iraq blast
The Ministry of Defence has named the second soldier killed in a roadside explosion in Iraq on Monday. Gunner Samuela Vanua, 27, from the 12 Regiment Royal Artillery, died as a result of injuries sustained from a roadside bomb near the town of Ad Dayr, north of Basra City.
