Collapsed Soldier Dies After Exercise

A soldier has died after an accident at a training facility in Lancashire. Private Steven Taylor-Murray, 23, was injured at Halton Camp in Lancaster while on a training week and died in hospital on Friday, the Army said. Lancashire Police launched an investigation into the death but it is not being treated as suspicious. The soldier, from East Kilbride, was training with 1st Infantry Training Battalion based in Catterick. He was due to join The Royal Regiment of Scotland after his training.

Weather Saves Stowaway

Every cloud does indeed have a 'silver lining' as a 20-year-old Romanian airplane stowaway has found. The man had a lucky escape after hiding on a plane flying from Vienna to London. He climbed into the rear wheel compartment of the plane on route to Heathrow Airport on Sunday and while he had bruises and hypothermia from outside temperatures as low as -41C, he only managed to survive because the plane flew at a low altitude to avoid stormy weather. Then his luck ran out as he is now in police custody in London. Last year, Japanese officials found a body on a Delta Airlines flight which arrived in Tokyo from New York inside one of the landing gear compartments of the Boeing aircraft during maintenance. He was thought to be a stowaway and probably froze to death, as the temperature in that part of the plane usually falls to about -50C during flights at the standard height.

'Responsible Mortgages' Needed

The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has welcomed the Housing Minister Grant Shapps' call for responsible mortgage lending and borrowing and a move towards more sustainable home ownership. However, CIH cautioned that there is a need for a balanced housing market with affordable options to buy or rent a home and that for a significant proportion of the population renting is an attractive long term housing option.

Prince Takes Giant Steps

The Earl and Countess of Wessex have begun a second day of engagements with a visit to the Giant's Causeway Visitors' Centre and World Heritage site. Prince Edward and his wife Sophie were greeted by Joan Christie, Lord-Lieutenant of Co Antrim and went on to meet Roy Bailie, Chairman of the National Trust and Hilary McGrady Northern Ireland Director.
