Actress Claims Naomi Campbell Given Diamond By Taylor

Actress Mia Farrow has told a war crimes trial that she heard supermodel Naomi Campbell say that she had been given a "huge diamond" by former Liberian President Charles Taylor.

Giving evidence at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in Netherlands, Ms Farrow referred to the morning after a charity dinner, hosted by former South African President Nelson Mandela, in the country in 1997.

She said that Ms Campbell told a group of guests at breakfast about how she had been awakened during the night by men knocking at her door, who told her that they had been sent by Mr Taylor and presented her with a "huge diamond".

According to Ms Farrow, Ms Campbell said that she planned to give the diamond to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund (NMCF).

Carole White, Ms Campbell's former modelling agent, also told the trial that Mr Taylor had promised the diamonds to Ms Campbell during the meal and said that Ms Campbell was "very excited" about receiving the gems. Ms White also said that the diamonds were "quite disappointing" because they were not "shiny".

Ms Campbell had given evidence to the trial last week, but said that she had been given some "dirty-looking stones" and did not know who they were from or that they were diamonds.

Prosecutors are attempting to link Mr Taylor to illegal 'blood diamonds' in order to prove allegations that he supported the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) in Sierra Leone and assisted them through weapon sales in exchange for illegally mined 'blood diamonds'.

Mr Taylor has denied all the allegations.
