A man has been arrested in Thailand in connection with the death of a 22-year-old Briton shot dead at a bar on New Years Eve.

It is thought that British tourist Stephen Ashton, of south London, was caught by a stray bullet during a fight between two groups at a bar on Koh Phangan.

26-year-old Ekkapan Kaewkla has now been arrested in connection with the incident, and a gun has been confiscated

Koh Phangan is a resort island, neighbouring Koh Samui, which draws thousands of backpackers to its famous full moon parties on Haad Rin.

According to the Bangkok Post, Mr Ashton was shot in the upper body in the early hours and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
