Phase-Two Of High Speed Railway Revealed
The government has unveiled details of the next phase of the £32bn HS2 high-speed rail network.
Phase two shows the preferred route running north from Birmingham, it includes five stops: Manchester; Manchester Airport; Toton near Nottingham; Sheffield; and Leeds.
With more than 70 groups opposing HS2 considerable criticism has already been heaped on phase-one, the London to Birmingham stage of the journey.
The Department for Transport said that HS2 phase two would virtually halve journey times between Birmingham and Manchester - to 41 minutes - and between London and Manchester from two hours and eight minutes to one hour and eight minutes.
Speeds of up to 250mph on HS2 will also reduce a Birmingham to Leeds journey from two hours to 57 minutes, while phase one will cut London-Birmingham travel to 49 minutes, from the current one hour and 24 minutes.

Teen in court over stabbing death
A 17-year-old has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman stabbed to death on a south London street. The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of murdering Carmelita Tulloch, 51. Mrs Tulloch, who has two daughters and a granddaughter, was attacked as she walked to work around 9am on Tuesday morning.

Man arrested over abduction of girl from bath
Police investigating the abduction of a six-year-old girl from her bath last December have arrested a man. A 34-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday morning at an address in Blyth, Northumberland, on suspicion of abduction and serious sexual assault. A 25-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Supreme Court Rejects Final HS2 Legal Challenge
A legal bid calling for more scrutiny of the government's plans for the HS2 national high-speed rail link has been rejected by the Supreme Court. The court unanimously rejected the challenged, which had questioned whether the government had followed the rules on environmental impact when assessing the plans for HS2.

Nuisance Rapper Plagues Police '999'
A single hoax caller has bombarded Greater Manchester Police with thousands of calls where he chants, sings, raps, preaches and plays loud music to call handlers. It started in January 2009, but in the last three months alone, the rapper has made around 700 calls, which costs the Force up to £1,000 a month purely to handle his calls.
