UKBA To Be Abolished

Home Secretary Theresa May has announced that the UK Border Agency (UKBA) will be abolished and its work returned to the Home Office.

Addressing MPs Mrs May said the agency’s performance “was not good enough".

Formed in 2008 the UKBA was to be an arms-length agency of the Home Office but Mrs May said this had led to a "secretive culture".

The service will now be split into parts focusing on the visa system and on immigration law enforcement, with both parts reporting directly to ministers.

It is the second time the UK Border Agency has been split in just over a year.

Last year, Mrs May announced that the UK Border Force - responsible for day-to-day operations - would stop being part of the agency and become a separate law-enforcement body.
