Stranded explorer rescued from ice floe

The British explorer who had been stranded on a polar ice floe for the past week has been rescued today by a rescue plane.

Forty-one-year-old Pen Hadow entered the record books last week as the first man to reach the North Pole, unsupported, through Canada. However, after completing the two-month long and near 500-mile polar trek, Hadow's rations were low and he had to call for assistance.

There were worries that time was running out for Hadow as his rescue beacon, which transmits his position via satellite, was running low on battery power. Several days of poor weather also seriously hampered rescue bids.

However, Hadow was located by a plane earlier today which landed on the ice floe and picked up the stranded explorer.

Pen will now be reunited with wife Mary and his one-year-old daughter Freya.
