UK Needs 'Defined Space Program'

A new report has called for a "defined and properly funded" national space programme in the UK if it is to capitalise on the progress made in recent years.

A review of the current space program, the Space Innovation & Growth Strategy (IGS), also lays out plans to boost exports from £2bn to 25bn per annum by 2013.

Briton Dies Of Suspected Heart Attack While Paragliding

A 53-year-old Briton as died in Tenerife while paragliding. It is believed that she may have suffered a heart attack.

According to reports Carolyn Dewdney, from Cheltenham, crashed in the Spanish holiday island on Tuesday.

It is understood she and her husband Nigel had been on a week-long paragliding holiday and were flying in a group in the mountainous area of Adeje when she became ill.

The Foreign Office said it was providing consular assistance.

School Evacuated Due To Roof Fire

A Pembrokeshire school was evacuated after a fire in a roof on Thursday.

The 380 pupils at Fenton Community Primary School in Haverfordwest were led to safety after the alert was raised at around 09:55 GMT.

Three classrooms are to stay closed for repairs following the blaze.

Renewed Appeal In 1995 School Teacher Murder Investigation
A fresh appeal for information has been issued 20 years after the murder of a Walthamstow school teacher. Joy Hewer was sexually assaulted and stabbed in an attack at her flat in Walthamstow on Tuesday, 17 October 1995. No one has ever been charged with her murder.

Nursing Home Residents Evacuated During Fire
All residents of a nursing home in Sutton had to be evacuated in the early hours of Wednesday morning due to a fire. Six engines and 30 firefighters responded to reports of a fire on the Avenue in Cheam just before 2am. It is understood that the fire affected the top floor and roof space of the three storey home.

£1bn Towards Free School Meals
£1bn is being unlocked to fund the Department of Education's free school meals commitment. The news, announced by deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, follows an announcement in September that every child in reception, year 1 and year 2 in state-funded schools will receive a free school lunch.

Over 500 Pupils Evacuated In School Fire
More than 500 pupils were evacuated from a school in north west London when a fire broke out in the roof the building. 65 staff and 540 pupils evacuated the school on Goodson Road in Willesden when the fire alarm sounded on Tuesday afternoon. There were no reports of any injuries.
