Open Letter Calls On Govt To Adopt 'Clear Strategy' For Flood Prevention
The prime minister has been urged to introduce a "clear strategy" for the management of water in an open letter, which claims that "water management techniques could have helped prevent the effect of flooding on villages, towns and over surrounding land".
A group consisting of "landscape architects, architects, engineers, hydrologists, ecologists and other specialists" have written an open letter to David Cameron, which has been published by the Telegraph newspaper.
The group of experts say they have the "experience necessary to tackle flooding", and called on the government to "be aware that the expertise of our professions is available and, we believe, urgently required."
The group make a number of recommendations in its letter, which can be read in full here, taking in how forestry and land management should be used in conjunction with "soft-engineered flood alleviation schemes".

Letter bomb suspect remanded in custody
A man has been remanded in custody, charged with the recent series of letter bomb attacks in the UK. Miles Cooper, 27, a primary school caretaker from Cherry Hinton near Cambridge, was arrested on Monday afternoon. He is charged with 12 offences under the Explosives Substances Act and the Offences Against the Person Act.

Two people die in flooding accident
Two men have died as they attempted to clear flood water from a flooded rugby club in Gloucestershire. It is thought that the two men, reported to be a father and son, were using a petrol-powered pump to clear water from the cellar of Tewkesbury Rugby Club and may have been overcome by petrol fumes.

NAO Say Govt Flood Defence Spending 'Insufficient'
The National Audit Office (NAO) has warned that the UK's flood defences are likely to "deteriorate faster" as the money being spent on maintaining them is "insufficient". A report from the NAO claims that half of the country's defences received a "minimal level" of maintenance which was insufficient to secure homes.
