Memorial Service Held For Bradford City Fire Anniversary

A memorial service has been held in Bradford marking the 30th anniversary of the Bradford City fire.

54 people were killed when the blaze broke out during a match against Lincoln City in 1985.

Hundreds of people attended the service in Centenary Square, including the current Bradford FC squad.

Lord Mayor of Bradford, Mike Gibbons, said: "The Bradford City fire lives long in the memories of the people of Bradford.

"I feel it is very important that we as a city take time each year on May 11, to remember those who lost their lives or were injured by this tragic event, which continues to touch the lives of so many in our district."

Lord Sugar Resigns From Labour Party

Lord Alan Sugar has resigned from the Labour Party.

In a statement made today 11 May, Lord Sugar said he had informed the party of his intention to quit and had made his decision before the general election.

He added: "In the past year I found myself losing confidence in the party due to their negative business policies and the general anti-enterprise concepts they were considering if they were elected."

Lord Sugar added he intends to continue working in the House of Lords, representing the "interests of business and enterprise in the UK."

Man Arrested Over Alleged Footballer Assault

A man has been arrested by Lancashire Police investigating an attack on a football player.

The 20 year old male is being held on suspicion of assault.

Chesterfield captain Ian Evatt claims he was "punched, kicked and spat" on by rival fans who ran onto the pitch after his team lost to Preston.

Police are continuing the investigation and are appealing for witnesses.

Body Parts 'Match' Missing Bradford Woman
Police in West Yorkshire have confirmed that human remains found in the River Aire are those of missing Bradford woman, Suzanne Blamires. The body parts were recovered from the river in Shipley on Tuesday, after being discovered by a member of the public who then reported the find to police.

Four arrested following Beeb's BNP documentary
Four men have been arrested today following the broadcast of a BBC documentary on the British National Party. A 23-year-old Bradford man was arrested in connection with racially aggravated public order offences, and a 35-year-old man and a 40-year-old man, both from Keighley, were arrested in connection with conspiracy to commit damage.

Lord Sugar Takes Up New Job
Business mogul Sir Alan Sugar took his seat in the House of Lords this afternoon, amid talks of a mechanism that would allow life peers to renounce their titles. Lord Sugar, as he will be known, was appointed to the Upper Chamber by Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The BBC Apprentice star will operate as an 'enterprise tzar' for the Government.
