Three Arrested Following 'Kidnap' Plot

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, West Midlands Police has confirmed.

The arrests come after an investigation into false and malicious information given to the force on 8 December 2014. The information said that an officer was going to be kidnapped as part of a terrorist plot. The threat was considered credible and measures were taken to protect officers and police staff.

However, a subsequent investigation found that the call was false and malicious.

Three men, aged 25, 28 and 31, and who are all from Birmingham, have been arrested. They are being questioned by detectives from West Midland Police's Anti-Corruption Unit, with support from the Counter Terrorism Unit.

The 28-year-old, who has not been named, is a serving police officer at Birmingham West & Central Local Policing Unit. He has also been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and misuse of policing systems. The other two men have also been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office.

A 31-year-old man arrested on the day of the offence has been eliminated from enquiries and since been deported by Border Officials.

An investigation is ongoing.
