Transport Secretary Responds Over Volkswagen Cheating Emissions

Following the news that Volkswagen cheated on emissions tests in the United States, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has said: "The government takes the unacceptable actions of VW extremely seriously.

"My priority is to protect the public as we go through the process of investigating what went wrong and what we can do to stop it happening again in the future.

"We have called on the EU to conduct a Europe wide investigation into whether there is evidence that cars here have been fitted with defeat devices.

"In the meantime we are taking robust action. The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) , the UK regulator, is working with vehicle manufacturers to ensure that this issue is not industry wide.

"As part of this work they will re-run laboratory tests where necessary and compare them against real world driving emissions."

Women's Safer Cycling Day To Be Held In London

The first 'Women's Safer Cycling Day' is to be held at the Guildhall Yard, hosted by the City of London Corporation.

Held in conjunction with the City of London Police the event hopes to engage with female city cyclists, promote safer cycling and to promote cycling as a way to improve the general health and wellbeing.

Marianne Fredericks, Streets and Walkways Committee Chairman, said: "Far too often we have heard about the serious incidents and dreadfully sad deaths of women cyclists across the capital over the past few years. Events like today won't solve the problem overnight but does serve a dual purpose. It will not only help raise awareness of how cycling can be a great form of transport, which is free and environmentally-friendly, but also highlight that unfortunately it is not risk-free.

"Anything we can do to help address the high proportion of women involved in cycling accidents is a step in the right direction. I'd urge everyone to come along to the events we have on display."
