WHO confirm fresh Sars case in China
World Health Organisation (WHO) officials have announced that independent laboratory tests have confirmed that a 32-year-old man, who has been placed in isolation in a hospital in Guangzhou city since last week, has the Sars virus.
The man, a television producer, is the first person confirmed to have contracted the flu-like illness in China since the WHO declared the outbreak contained in July 2003.
WHO officials said that an epidemiological investigation had been conducted in Guangdong province in an attempt to trace the source of the infection. A team of international experts from WHO are assisting in a joint mission in the area with the Ministry of Health of China and the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
Around 25 know contacts of the man, who have been placed in isolation as a precaution, all are said to be 'well'.
Chinese authorities have announced that thousands of civets are to be slaughtered following an apparent link between the strain of the disease found and that discovered in the cat-like mammals.
Following last year's outbreak, health chiefs in China were castigated by authorities worldwide for a cover-up of the seriousness of the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in the Chinese provinces. China's health authorities were cautioned that a repeat of this would not be tolerated.
