The Flying Scotsman sold to private consortium

The Flying Scotsman, one of the world's most famous steam engines, has been bought by a private consortium that secured the engine with bid backed by a lottery-backed grant of £1.8 million from the National Railway Museum in York.

The end of the seven-week auction will see the 80-year-old steam engine remain in the UK, and has ended speculation that the valued locomotive would be sold to an overseas bidder.

A further sum of £365,000 raised by a public appeal which was matched by a donation from Sir Richard Branson to provide over £730,000 towards the bid.

The A3 class locomotive is the last example of the type. The Flying Scotsman was the first steam locomotive to reach 100mph and the first loco to travel non-stop on the London-Edinburgh express run.

It is understood that donations received will also be used to ensure that Locomotive No. 4472 will be maintained in a state fit for mainline operations.

Sir Richard turned up at today's announcement of the auction end dressed in a hunting Stuart tartan kilt said that too much of Britain's heritage has disappeared.
