FBU chiefs accept employers' offer

Fire Brigades Union (FBU) chiefs have accepted a proposal which could head off threatened strike action.

The proposal, which the FBU executive has reportedly said it is happy with, will now be put forward to union members.

After consultations, a meeting of the executive is expected to take place next week which could see strike action abandoned.

Firefighters took unofficial action last week over the suspension of colleagues in Greater Manchester.

The suspension of firefighters in Salford, Greater Manchester, followed a refusal by crews to carry out a range of additional tasks - duties that employers claimed were part of the phased settlement reached last year following a bitter dispute.

On May 20, some 40 Salford firefighters were suspended for refusing to operate equipment that included mass decontamination facilities - equipment that is designed to be used in the event of a chemical attack.

FBU General Secretary Andy Gilchrist also said last week that employers had yet to sign up to the initial phase of the national pay deal reached in November last year after a protracted series of strikes.

A 3.5% pay award outstanding since November had been delayed and this caused "firefighters' anger to boil over", he said.
