Travel chaos hits London in wake of terror attacks

In the wake of Thursday’s explosions in the capital the Metropolitan Police have urged anyone who does not need to come into London to stay away.

People already in London are being urged to limit travelling around the capital wherever possible.

The London Underground system has been suspended. The Network Rail system is still in operation, although some stations are closed and substantial delays are expected.

All bus services in central London – zone one – were suspended, as are all coach services in and out of the city. However, it was reported on Thursday evening that some bus services were operating again.

Flights at Heathrow airport are operating as normal, although delays are expected. Flights are operating as normal from both Stansted and Gatwick.

Many major roads into London are closed and motorists are being urged to stay away.

The Met said that it is continuing to respond to 999 emergency calls, but non-emergency calls will have a seriously delayed response. They have requested members of the public not to contact the police at this stage unless it is a genuine emergency.

Anyone concerned about relatives or friends can contact the emergency telephone number on: 0870 156 6344.
