Wounded Pc speaks to family

The 23-year-old Nottinghamshire police officer who was shot on Tuesday morning has regained consciousness and has spoken to her family.

Rachel Bown, who was nearing the end of her two-years as a probationer, was gunned down as she investigated a report of a burglary in Nottingham.

Shot below her standard issue body armour, Pc Bown was seriously wounded as she and a fellow officer investigated a reported break-in.

Rushed to the city's Queen's Medical Centre she underwent emergency surgery for a stomach wound and she remains in intensive care where her condition is described as "serious but stable".

Nottinghamshire Chief Constable Steven Green praised Rachel's courage and said that despite the shooting the force are winning the fight against gun crime.

Police figures indicate that the number of shooting incidents had fallen by over 70% on the preceding year.

An incident room has been established at Radford Road Police Station.

Police said that the details of a description of the suspect are still being clarified and it is not clear if the shooting was related to the break-in.
