Inquiry launched following Pc's death
A man is being held on suspicion of the murder of a police officer who died following a car crash early this morning.
Northumbria police constable Joe Carroll, 46, died when the patrol car he was driving crashed on the A69, near Corbridge, Northumberland, around 2:30am on Thursday morning.
Pc Carroll and a police inspector were taking a man to Newcastle's Etal Lane police station, when the car left the road and overturned.
Northumbria Police said Pc Carroll received injuries from which he later died. The two other men in the car were taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
The inspector was released from hospital after being treated for minor injuries and shock.
Police said that a man who was already under arrest for an unrelated murder had been further re-arrested on suspicion of murder.
An investigation is now underway to establish what happened.
Pc Carroll, who was married but had no children, had been a police officer for over 24 years and had served as a local community officer in Bellingham for 13 years.
Northumbria Police Chief Constable Mike Craik paid tribute to Pc Carroll. He said: "He was a much loved and valued member of the community that he served in Bellingham and will be greatly missed by his colleagues who will remember him for his sense of community, by his professional motivation and his genuine values.
"He was the finest kind of local police officer that any community and colleague would wish to have and he will be greatly missed."

Funeral held for crash PC
Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of PC Joe Carroll, who was killed in a car crash while transporting a prisoner. PC Carroll, 46, died when his car overturned on the A69 in Northumberland on April 13. His colleague, Inspector Brian English, who was a passenger in the car, was injured in the crash.

Major Police Hunt Launched After Boy Taken From Hospital
A major police hunt has begun after a five-year-old boy with a brain tumour, was taken by his family without consent from Southampton General Hospital. Police said that Ashya King was taken from the hospital by Brett King, 51, and Naghemeh King, 45, on Thursday. It is thought he may have been taken to France.

On 3 May, Kent Police began a search for Michael Wheatley, 55, who had failed to return to HMP Standford Hill after being released on temporary licence.
