Funeral held for crash PC

Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of PC Joe Carroll, who was killed in a car crash while transporting a prisoner.

PC Carroll, 46, died when his car overturned on the A69 in Northumberland on April 13.

His colleague, Inspector Brian English, who was a passenger in the car, was injured in the crash.

Steven Graham, 39, a staff sergeant at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, has been charged with the manslaughter of PC Carroll and causing actual bodily harm to Inspector English.

He was remanded in custody by Northumberland magistrates last week.

Hundreds of police officers attended the funeral service for PC Carroll at Cathedral Church of St Mary in Newcastle. His funeral cortège was escorted from his home in Bellingham by police motorcycle outriders.

The service was conducted by Father Harry O'Reilly, who married PC Carroll and his wife Caroline, 43, 21 years ago.
