Soldier jailed over PC's death

A instructor at Sandhurst military academy has been jailed for five-and-a-half years for the manslaughter of a police officer.

The incident happened in April when Steven Graham, 39, had been arrested on suspicion of causing a breach of the peace in Hexham, Northumberland.

He was being transported by Pc Joe Carroll and Inspector Brian English to a police station in Newcastle, when Graham made a drunken grab for the handbrake in an attempt to escape.

The car skidded out of control and overturned on the A69 and Pc Carroll suffered fatal head injuries, while Insp English was also injured.

Graham had previously admitted manslaughter at Newcastle Crown Court. He denied causing actual bodily harm to Insp English and the charge will lie on file.

Pc Carroll, who was originally from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, had been a police officer for almost 25 years. He lived with his wife in Gosforth, Newcastle.

Chief Constable of Northumbria, Mike Craik, paid tribute to Pc Carroll, describing him as "an old-fashioned copper".
