Basra crash soldiers named

The first British servicewoman to die in Iraq has been named among the five military personnel killed in Saturday's helicopter crash in Basra.

Flight Lieutenant Sarah-Jayne Mulvihill, 32, a Flight Operations Officer from Royal Air Force Benson died in the crash along with Wing Commander John Coxen, Lieutenant Commander Darren Chapman, Captain David Dobson and Marine Paul Collins.

Wing Commander Coxen, who was born in 1959, was the most senior officer to be killed in Iraq.

Lt Cdr Chapman, 40, was married with three children, He was the Commanding Offcier of 847 Naval Air Squardron, based at Yeovilton.

Lt Dobson, 27, had been serving as a pilot with 847 Naval Air Squadron, while Marine Paul Paul Collins was serving as an Air Door Gunner with 847 Naval Air Squadron.

The cause of the crash is still unknown, although some reports suggest that the helicopter may have been hit by a missile or rocket.

The crash was followed by clashes between local people and British troops. According to reports, at least four Iraqis, including one child, were killed.

In a statement to the House of Commons today, new Defence Secretary Des Browne confirmed that an investigation in to the crash was underway.

Funeral Held For Blackpool Victim Of MH17 Air Crash
The funeral has taken place of Glenn Thomas, who died in the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 air crash. Mr Thomas (49), from Blackpool, was one of 298 people who died in July when the flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was brought down over northern Ukraine. He was buried in a humanist service at Lowther Pavilion in Lytham.

Injured Lastminute.com founder returns to the UK
Lastminute.com founder, Martha Lane Fox, has returned to the UK after being seriously injured in a car crash in Morocco earlier this week. Her doctor, Mohammed Missoum, said that the 30-year-old was “suffering from multiple trauma” and was flown home to the UK at her family’s request.

Probe continues into two US soldiers at Guantanamo Bay
The US Defense Department is continuing its investigations into two servicemen associated with the confinement facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Both cases involve personnel assigned to Camp Delta on US Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, where the US is detaining suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban members.
