Man found guilty of Toni-Ann murder

A man has been found guilty of the murder of seven-year-old Toni-Ann Byfield and her father.

Joel Smith, 33, had denied murdering drug dealer Bertram Byfield, 41, and Toni-Ann at Byfield's home in Kensal Green, north-west London in September 2003.

However, he was found guilty following a trial at the Old Bailey.

Toni-Ann was shot in the back as she apparently tried to run from the room following the shooting of Mr Byfield.

Post-mortem examinations revealed that Mr Byfield was not Toni-Ann's natural father.

Smith had told the court that he had neither a grudge against Mr Byfield nor a motive for wanting to kill him.

He told the court that another man had admitted to him that he had carried out the killing.
