Two men charged in phone-tapping row

Two men have been charged in connection with allegations that phone messages for the Royal Family had been intercepted.

Clive Goodman, 48, the royal editor of the 'News of the World', and Glen Mulcaire, 35, have been charged with multiple offences related to accessing voicemail messages, under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000.

The charges relate to the alleged interception of message between January and May this year.

The men have also been charged with conspiring to intercept communications.

Mr Goodman, from Putney, London and Mr Mulcaire, from Sutton, south London, have been released on bail to appear in court on August 16.

Both men are due to appear at Horseferry Magistrates' Court.

A 50-year-old man, also from Sutton, was also arrested, but was later released without charge.

The arrests came after a investigation by Scotland Yard, launched more than seven months ago, following complaints from staff at Clarence House – Prince Charles' official residence – regarding alleged repeated breaches within the telephone network.
