Royal reporter suspended over phone-tapping allegations

The News of the World has suspended its royal editor Clive Goodman, following his arrest over allegations of mobile phone hacking.

Mr Goodman, 48, from Putney, south London, is due to appear in court next week, charged with conspiring to intercept voicemail messages and intercepting voicemail messages.

Another man, Glen Mulcaire, 35, from Sutton, south London, has also been charged in connection with the allegations.

Both men were released on bail and are due to reappear at Horseferry Magistrates' Court on August 16.

A 50-year-old man, also from Sutton, was also arrested, but was later released without charge.

The charges relate to the alleged interception of messages for the Royal Family between January and May this year.

The arrests came after an investigation by Scotland Yard, launched more than seven months ago, following complaints from staff at Clarence House - Prince Charles' official residence - regarding alleged repeated breaches within the telephone network.

Mr Goodman was held under Section 1 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, under which the potential penalties are a maximum of two years in jail, a fine or both.
