Hundreds of migrants arriving daily in UK

The UK population swelled by around 500 people a day, due to migrants coming to live in the country, official figures have revealed.

The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics showed that 565,000 people came to live in the UK in 2005, but only 380,000 left, leaving an increase of 185,000 people in the UK population.

The largest number of immigrants - 121,000 - came from the 'new Commonwealth', specifically India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

However, 80,000 people came to the UK from the Eastern European countries which joined the European Union in 2004, a significant increase from 54,000 in 2004. The majority came from Poland, with 49,000 people coming from that country alone.

Of the people who left the UK, more than half - 198,000 - were British citizens.

The top choice destination for them was Australia, followed by Spain and France.
