MoD names patrol boat crew killed in Iraq

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed the names of the four British service personnel killed when their boat was attacked on Sunday on the Shatt Al-Arab waterway in Iraq.

The four were named as; Warrant Officer Lee Hopkins, 35, Royal Corps of Signals, Staff Sergeant Sharron Elliott, 34, of the Intelligence Corps, Corporal Ben Nowak, 27, of 45 Commando Royal Marines and Marine Jason Hylton, 33, of 539 Assault Squadron Royal Marines.

All died as a result of injuries sustained following the detonation of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) mounted on a bridge on the Shatt Al Arab River on the eastern edge of Basra City.

All were onboard an open boat which was part of a routine patrol travelling north towards the Shatt Al Arab Hotel, a British Army base on the river.

In the attack, which took place at approximately 1.50pm local time, three other UK service personnel sustained serious injuries.
