Man remanded over Suffolk prostitute murders

A 48-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the murders of five prostitutes in Suffolk.

Steven Wright, a former fork-lift truck driver, is charged with the murders of Gemma Adams, 25, Anneli Alderton, 24, Paula Clennell, 24, Tania Nicol, 19 and Annette Nicholls, 29.

He was remanded in custody at Ipswich Magistrates' Court until May 1.

Mr Wright was arrested at his home in Ipswich on December 19 and was charged with the murders two days later.

The bodies of the five women were discovered in countryside near Ipswich between December 2 and December 12 last year.

It is known that Ms Alderton had been strangled, while Ms Clennell died from "compression" of the neck, but police have not revealed how the other three women died.

Both Attorney General Lord Goldsmith and Suffolk chief constable Alastair McWhirter had urged the media to show restraint in reporting on the case.
